L’artista inglese Tim Knowles crea opere indipendenti dall’azione delle sue mani usando apparecchi complessi o pratiche che richiedono molto tempo.
Nel suo lavoro Knowles cerca di rendere visibile l’invisibile: il vento, mentre muove i rami di un albero; oppure il percorso disegnato dal riflesso della luna sull’acqua ondulata. Tutto si basa sulla logica della causa ed effetto, come in una mappa che registra una serie di azioni completamente regolate dal caso e dal tempo.
Nella serie di disegni intitolata “Tree Art” presentati alla Rokeby Gallery, Knowles ha usato soltanto il vento come guida: dopo avere appeso alcune penne alle estremità dei rami di un albero ha aspettato che l’azione del vento si rendesse visibile. I segni tracciati dalle penne su di un foglio di carta sottostante, ne hanno registrato la presenza.
Questo metodo mette in luce una certa natura dei processi artistici nei quali gli strumenti utilizzati acquistano vita propria e generano la costruzione di sistemi autonomi (in questo caso segnici), strutture dinamiche che sostituiscono le forme statiche.
Credo che la bella prova di Knowles possa essere catalogata tra quei procedimenti di Generative Art dei quali Philip Galanter (“What is Generative Art? Complexity Theory as a Context for Art Theory” – New York University, 2003) formula la seguente definizione: “L’arte generativa fa riferimento a tutte le pratiche dell’arte in cui l’artista usa un sistema, come un insieme di regole linguistiche: il programma di un computer, una macchina, o altre invenzioni procedurali che sono messe in moto con un certo grado d’autonomia e così contribuiscono o interamente realizzano, un lavoro d’arte completo.”
Se il tratto fondante della Generative Art sta nella costituzione, da parte dell’artista, di un sistema autonomo in grado di generare un possibile numero di risultati piuttosto che uno soltanto, Galanter individua giustamente in Duchamp e poi Cage, Burroughs e Lewitt, i precursori storici di tali modalità.
Anche se l’aspetto hi-tech prevale fino all’eccesso nel panorama contemporaneo della Generative Art e forse dell’arte in genere, il lavoro tecnologicamente minimale di Knowles conferma felicemente il postulato che Galanter formula poche righe dopo: “…la Generative Art non è necessariamente legata all’alta tecnologia.”

British artist Tim Knowles Knowles creates works independent of his own hand, using elaborate apparatus or time consuming practices. He tries to makes visible the invisible whether it is the wind as it moves branches with pens attached to them or the path drawn by the moons reflection on undulating water. All rely on the logic of cause and effect, as a map of time and a record of actions governed entirely by chance. In his “Tree Art” project at Rokeby Gallery, Knowles only makes use of the wind as his guide. He creates a large scale tree drawing where multiple pens are tied to the tips of tree branches, as the tree sways in the wind the pens draw onto a panel of paper below. This method puts a certain light on the nature of the art-making process, because the tools acquire lives of their own. In these cases, the constructions of art-making systems substitute the making of static forms.
I believe that Knowles’s work might be ascribed to the Generative Art’s realm, as Philip Galanter formulates the following definition (“What is Generative Art? Complexity Theory as a Context for Art Theory” – New York University, 2003):
”Generative Art refers to any art practice where the artist uses a system, such as a set of natural language rules, a computer program, a machine, or other procedural invention, which is set into motion with some degree of autonomy contributing to or resulting in a completed work of art.”
If the defining trait of Generative Art is that the artist establishes a system which can generate a number of possible forms rather than one single finished form, Gallanter rightly points out that Duchamp, Cage, Burroughs and Lewitt were forerunner in embracing this generative approach. And despite the fact that a great deal of contemporary Generative Art is deeply involved with high-tech, Knowles’ technologically minimal attempt confirms Gallanter’s postulate: “Generative Art is uncoupled from any particular technology. Generative Art may or may not be high-tech.”
